Siemens Watches Iberian Blackout, Offers High-Tech Solution

Following the massive April 28 blackout that left Portugal and Spain without power for over 12 hours, Siemens is stepping in. The German tech giant is “actively collaborating” with Portugal’s REN and Spain’s REE to roll out its next-gen Gridscale X software, designed to improve grid flexibility and prevent future failures.

At Siemens’ Competence Center in Milan—its R&D hub for power grids—the topic of the blackout remains sensitive. During a tour of the facility, where 1,700 people and three hives of bees work side by side, Siemens' European marketing head Marco Latorre quietly nods toward a restricted-access lab. That’s where the company is secretly developing grid software for Enel, Italy’s main power provider and owner of Spain’s Endesa.

Siemens hopes its cutting-edge tech will help Iberia modernize energy infrastructure and avoid a repeat of April’s chaos.
