Portuguese energy operator REN – Redes Energéticas Nacionais has strengthened its presence in Chile by acquiring Transmisora de Energía Nacimiento (TENSA) for $71.4 million, expanding its transmission network in the country to around 280 km of lines and five substations.
TENSA, previously owned by Chilean industrial group CMPC, operates 190 km of transmission lines primarily in the south-central region. These assets, initially developed to serve CMPC's industrial units, have mostly been reclassified as regulated assets for the 2024–2027 tariff period.
This acquisition adds to REN's portfolio in Chile, where it already holds a 42.5% stake in Electrogas—which operates a 166 km gas pipeline—and is the sole shareholder of Transemel, its transmission-focused subsidiary.
REN described the move as aligned with its strategic plan for organic and selective growth in Chile, emphasizing financial discipline, profitability, and investment-grade credit standards.
