Accessibility at cultural events is moving from a temporary accommodation to a permanent standard. In an interview with Briefing, Access Lab co-founder Tiago Fortuna explained how innovations like AI audio descriptions and dedicated apps are improving inclusion across major Portuguese festivals.
While digital tools are scaling quickly, creating universal standards for physical infrastructure and ticketing remains the industry’s biggest hurdle.
Innovations and Policy Progress
Major festivals like NOS Alive, Ageas Cool Jazz, and MEO Marés are testing ground-breaking solutions. AI systems now deliver real-time audio descriptions directly to smartphones for visually impaired attendees. Apps like Sentido also stream Portuguese Sign Language and event-wide accessibility information on demand.
In addition to technology, policies are advancing. Under Decree-Law 65/2026, about 400 state-run cultural venues now offer free tickets for companions of people with disabilities—a rule that many private festival organizers have voluntarily adopted.
Ecosystem Opportunities
Teams creating inclusive solutions can publish their profiles in the tech companies section, while event organizers can locate flexible offices through the coworking spaces database.
