Portugal Urged to Expand Generative AI Development

Lisbon, January 2025 – At the Diário de Notícias 160th-anniversary conference, Daniela Braga, CEO of Defined Crowd, emphasized the need for Portugal to expand its efforts in generative AI. Speaking via Zoom, she highlighted the country's potential but warned that delays in progress risk leaving Portugal further behind globally.

Key Points from Daniela Braga's Speech

Basic technology exists: Portugal has foundational generative AI tools but must expand their application.

National AI agency: Braga advocated for creating a national AI agency, previously envisioned as the AI Hub, to drive development.

Global focus: AI services should cater not only to domestic needs but also target global markets.

Urgency required: Each passing month without progress makes it harder to develop competitive solutions.

Education and partnerships: Braga called for increased academic collaborations between Portuguese and North American institutions and student exchanges to strengthen AI expertise.

Carlos Formigal, head of engineering at Philip Morris International’s IT Hub, shared insights into the company’s long-standing use of AI. He emphasized that organizations must identify areas where AI can transform operations, describing it as a "journey of discovery."

Both speakers underscored AI's transformative potential across industries, urging Portugal to harness its talent and existing technology for global competitiveness.
