OutSystems Founder Paulo Rosado: “We’ve Already Created Many Millionaire Workers”

Paulo Rosado, founder of Portuguese tech unicorn OutSystems, has stepped down from his executive role after 24 years at the helm. In an interview with Expresso, Rosado reflected on the company’s success and took aim at Portugal’s business environment.

Key Highlights:

- Wealth Creation:

Rosado says OutSystems has already produced many millionaire employees, thanks to its policy of granting shares to staff. “Giving people equity makes them feel like entrepreneurs,” he said.

- Criticism of Portugal:

He criticized the country’s "unreasonable tax burden" and "suffocating labor laws," arguing that Portuguese workers take home less net income than their UK counterparts on the same gross salary.

- Challenge to Politicians:

Rosado said he’d like to see a politician "create a company and 1,000 jobs" before making laws that affect business.

- No Legacy Concerns:

Although he wants to see the company continue to succeed, Rosado emphasized he isn’t concerned with leaving a personal legacy.

OutSystems now employs 1,600 people globally and remains one of Portugal’s most successful tech companies.
