DST Group is funding the first industrial construction PhD in Portugal

The DST Group, based in Braga and owned by the Teixeira family (ranked 35th wealthiest in Portugal by Forbes, with a fortune of €398M), is making a notable investment in the construction sector. They are fully funding the PhD of their Innovation Manager, Sara Costa, at the University of Minho. Her research is on construction industrialization, focusing on productivity, skills, and how organizations change in a sector that usually resists it.

DST, which has more than 2,000 workers (30% are women) and already employs 10 people with PhDs, says that industrialization changes processes, business models, company cultures, and ways of thinking. The group has a €700M turnover and €80M EBITDA. They see advanced training, research, and patents as ways to boost innovation, productivity, and wages in Portugal.

DST President José Teixeira says there is a need for more PhDs in companies and scientific publications to really change the sector.
