Continente Leverages AI and Automation to Boost Efficiency and Customer Experience

Continente, a supermarket chain in Portugal owned by Sonae, is using more automation and artificial intelligence to be more efficient and make shopping better for customers. They’ve already added things like floor-cleaning robots, the Smart Continente app, and a virtual assistant called “Mariana.” These can be found in over 150 stores, including the world's biggest autonomous store, Continente Bom Dia Leiria São Romão.

Pedro Santos, the Director of Innovation and Operations Development at MC, says that these technologies aren't only about cutting costs. They also help make store operations more consistent, safer, and easier. Automation lets staff focus on helping customers since they don’t have to do the same tasks over and over.

Robotics and AI are used in warehouses and on the sales floor. In warehouses, automation makes it easier and more efficient to handle goods. In autonomous stores, robots help customers shop faster and easier.

Continente has also been among the first to use AI solutions for stores, mixing new ideas with a focus on getting better all the time. Tools like the Smart Continente app (with voice search that knows what you like) and Mariana, the virtual assistant, have greatly improved customer support.

Pedro Santos points out that AI and automation are still changing quickly and have their difficulties. Continente intends to keep investing because they see that it helps automate tasks, make operations better, and improve the customer experience. so they give better value to the Portuguese retail market.
