Visabeira invests €115 million in US acquisitions, downplays Trump tariffs’ impact

Visabeira Group, led by Nuno Terras Marques, has invested €115 million in two major acquisitions in the US energy and telecommunications sectors, contributing to a record year with sales up 20.4% to €44.5 million in profits. The recent purchase of a 70% stake in Michigan-based Verità, a telecom infrastructure company operating in 18 US states with 350 employees, cost around €32 million (excluding an €11 million loan).

These acquisitions added €226 million to consolidated revenue and €8.7 million to net income last fiscal year, alongside organic growth and a 15% increase in headcount to 16,346 employees worldwide. Visabeira operates mainly in Portugal, Europe, Africa, and the Americas.

Founder Fernando Campos Nunes called it “historic results,” with group revenue hitting €2.093 billion (+24% YoY), doubling in three years. Although foreign markets now make up 79% of sales, the domestic market still contributes 21%. EBITDA rose 4.4% to €244 million.

With a contracted services portfolio of €5.682 billion (excluding materials supplied by operators), Visabeira maintained solid financial health despite net debt rising from €746 million in 2023 to €880 million due to US acquisitions.

The company plans further strategic acquisitions, recently buying UK’s MSP Technologies (energy storage and renewables) and a 60% stake in Belgian telecom services provider Terusus.

Operating since 1980 across 135 countries with subsidiaries in 18, Visabeira insists that recent US tariffs will not materially affect its operations, since few involve US imports or exports, and production factors are not strongly tied to global trade flows.

Besides telecom and energy, Visabeira’s industrial division includes ceramics, glassware, biofuels, and kitchen furniture, featuring brands Vista Alegre and Bordallo Pinheiro. Cristiano Ronaldo invested last year, acquiring a 10% stake in Vista Alegre Atlantis and 30% in Vista Alegre Spain, with joint ventures planned in the Middle East and Asia.

The tourism and real estate arm owns 14 Montebelo Hotels & Resorts (9 in Portugal, 5 in Mozambique) and several restaurants, with expansion ongoing in Lisbon’s Alcântara Maritime Terminal.
