Technology in the Feminine: 60% of CMU Portugal Academy's First Cohort Are Women

The CMU Portugal Academy, a partnership between Carnegie Mellon University and Instituto Superior Técnico, is seeing strong female participation in its inaugural year. According to the Academy, 60% of the first-year vacancies were filled by women, marking a significant milestone in promoting gender equality in tech education.

“Equality also involves access to training in all areas, because women have the same right to be experts and to actively contribute with their ideas, projects, and knowledge,” said Raquel Yam, executive director of the program focused on digital technology training.

In its first year, the Academy received 250 applications and has set a goal of training 500 professionals over the next five years, with a special emphasis on attracting even more women into the tech sector.

The program offers three specialized courses: 'AI, Data Science, & Machine Learning', 'Product Management', and 'User Experience & Service Design'. Notably, 33% of the 45-member teaching staff are women, reinforcing the Academy’s commitment to inclusivity at every level.
