Spanish Bank Reportedly in Talks to Acquire BNI Europa

BNI Europa is once again close to being sold - this time to a Spanish bank, reportedly Caja de Extremadura, according to unconfirmed sources.

Negotiations are said to be advancing toward the signing of a Purchase and Sale Agreement (SPA).

The transaction has not yet reached the Bank of Portugal, which would later forward the deal to the European Central Bank (ECB) for approval.

BNI Europa, owned by Angolan bank BNI, has been seeking a buyer since 2019, though previous attempts have fallen through.

The bank’s 2024 Annual Report shows a shift from a €421,400 profit in 2023 to a €1.8 million loss last year. Despite this, the shareholder confirms that the sale process remains active and “at an advanced stage.”
