The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) is hosting the 1st Space Education Summit today and tomorrow, aiming to inspire young talent and showcase the growing potential of Portugal’s aerospace sector.
Organized under the New Space Portugal initiative and supported by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), the event brings together universities including Aveiro, Minho, Évora, Beira Interior, Instituto Superior Técnico, Nova SBE, and the Air Force Academy. It focuses on the present and future of aerospace education, with discussions around sustainability, security, defense, and innovation.
“We want to motivate and guide students by showing that there is a real future in aerospace here in Portugal,” said Emir Sirage, executive director of New Space Portugal. He emphasized the rising demand for skills in electronics, electrical engineering, information systems, and mechanics to fuel the transformation already underway.
Portugal is positioning itself as a future European space hub, driven by projects like the Atlantic Constellation, which involves Geosat, CEiiA, and the Portuguese Air Force in developing Earth observation satellites.
Sirage highlighted that this shift not only promotes national sovereignty but also fosters a stronger economy, high-skilled jobs for young professionals, and a thriving scientific community.
