Consulting Giants Shake Up Interviews with AI

Top consulting firms are rewriting the rules of their prestigious interviews. McKinsey, BCG, and Bain have long relied on case studies, but now AI is becoming central to both client work and recruitment. McKinsey is testing its internal chatbot, Lilli, in interviews—an AI tool that digests a century of projects and over 100,000 documents. BCG has introduced a similar tool, Casey, adding more ambiguity to case questions.

These changes reflect the firms’ focus on AI-driven solutions, seeking candidates who can leverage technology effectively. Yet, there are limits: cover letters generated by ChatGPT are no longer reviewed in some offices, and using AI in interviews without approval can lead to instant disqualification. For applicants, understanding AI isn’t just an advantage—it’s becoming a requirement.
