Carlos Fiolhais Innovation Center opens in Maia to foster digital creativity

The Carlos Fiolhais Innovation Center (CICF) has officially started operating in Maia, becoming the newest Social Innovation Laboratory with Technology in Portugal. It was created through a partnership between CDI Portugal and the Maia City Council. The center provides a learning experience where people can create, test, and rethink using technology - such as robotics, AI, music, apps, and digital art.

The center is open to students aged 12 to 18, as well as teachers, families, and the wider community.

It encourages learning through hands-on activities. Participants can explore different “Universes” like programming, 3D printing, robotics, and fighting misinformation, choosing topics that interest them. Each project or achievement is documented, and projects can range from short workshops to three-month courses, helping people keep improving their digital skills.

The CICF is based on the Digital Citizenship Centers (CCD) concept from CDI Portugal - places where technology connects with people and communities.

These centers help build digital literacy, critical thinking, creativity, and civic participation, enabling citizens to use technology to address real-world issues. The Maia center also welcomes NEET youth, adults, and seniors, supporting digital inclusion, job opportunities, and active aging.
