BBVA Rolls Out Gemini‑Powered Google Workspace to 100,000 Staff

BBVA is giving its 100,000 employees in 25 countries a new coworker: Google’s Gemini. Building on a partnership that began in 2011, the Spanish bank is switching its entire productivity stack to Google Workspace with embedded generative AI.

With Gemini living inside Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Slides—and available through the mobile app and NotebookLM—teams can draft emails, summarize reports, crunch data and design presentations in seconds. Internal pilots suggest staff could reclaim roughly three hours a week once repetitive chores disappear.

Security and compliance stay front‑and‑center: every user must complete BBVA’s “AI Express” training, aligned with the EU AI Act, before accessing the tools. Data governance rules mirror those already applied to core banking systems.

“Gemini plus Workspace will spark ideas and strip away busywork—exactly the fuel our people need to innovate,” says Elena Alfaro, BBVA’s global AI adoption lead.

Google Cloud Iberia chief Isaac Hernández calls the upgrade “a glimpse of banking’s future,” where AI boosts both efficiency and creativity without breaking regulatory guardrails.
