ANA Airports Support 725,000 Jobs and €30.2 Billion in GDP, Study Reveals

ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal plays a crucial role in the national economy, supporting 725,000 jobs and contributing €30.2 billion to Portugal’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to a new study revealed by Thierry Ligonnière, CEO of ANA.

Speaking in Porto at the launch of the new Porto–Boston route, Ligonnière highlighted the preliminary findings of a comprehensive study—developed in collaboration with Porto Business School, Nova SBE, and the Universities of Algarve, Azores, and Madeira—on the economic and social impact of Portuguese airports.

Key insights from the study include:

- Every €1 million spent by tourists generates 35 jobs.

- Every 40 visitors create one job in the national economy.

“These numbers show that the success of the airport concession is also the success of the regions and the country,” emphasized Ligonnière.

At Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto, 35 airlines currently operate flights to 120 destinations, contributing to a total annual passenger traffic of nearly 16 million—a number that now rivals Lisbon’s traffic when VINCI took over the concession.

The study underscores how airports serve as economic engines, not just in tourism, but also through job creation and regional development across Portugal. The full report is expected to be presented publicly in the coming weeks.
