Air France-KLM Still Interested in TAP Privatization Despite Political Instability

Air France-KLM remains committed to privatizing TAP despite the political crisis in Portugal, though CEO Ben Smith emphasized the importance of "visibility quickly" and stability to move forward with purchasing a stake. The Franco-Dutch airline group views any potential delay of six to 12 months due to political uncertainty as “not material,” but insists on clear signals of stability in order to proceed.

Alongside competitors like Lufthansa and the IAG group (comprising Iberia and British Airways), Air France-KLM is actively vying to privatize TAP. Smith stated that while delays might impact the timeline, they wouldn’t significantly alter the group’s strategic plans or route development.

During a press conference, Smith underlined that while Air France-KLM hopes to gain greater clarity soon, the brand, network, and jobs at TAP remain central to their interest in the airline. The group is particularly focused on TAP’s strong presence in key markets like Latin America, and its qualified workforce. He also highlighted the importance of guarantees related to maintaining TAP’s brand and its workforce, issues that align with the group’s strategic priorities.

Smith’s comments echo those made during French President Macron's recent visit to Portugal, where he affirmed that Air France and TAP could work together innovatively. Despite the political backdrop, Air France-KLM’s interest remains strong, with the group prepared to move forward once stability is secured.
