Small businesses in Portugal are working harder to stay safe from cyberattacks. A Hiscox Cyber Preparedness Report from 2025 says that 86% of these businesses have gotten better at defending themselves against cyber threats in the past year, with about a third saying they've made big improvements. Hiscox says this shows that businesses are trying to keep up with new rules and protect themselves from more complicated attacks.
Even so, over half of these small businesses were hit by at least one cyberattack in the past year. This caused problems like trouble getting new customers, security issues for partners, and higher costs for telling customers about breaches. Companies still think that changes in rules and laws are the biggest risk.
The study shows that companies are really trying to prevent attacks. Most businesses trained their remote workers, updated their cybersecurity training, and bought security software. Only a tiny number of businesses didn't do anything to protect themselves.
Portugal is doing well compared to other countries: almost half of the small businesses plan to spend way more on cybersecurity, which is more than in Spain. Around the world, almost all companies are putting money into preventing cyberattacks, and they're likely to keep doing so.
Ana Silva from Hiscox Portugal says that the information shows that Portuguese small businesses are thinking differently. She points out that they're working harder to train employees, use new technology, and prevent attacks. The report also says it's important to check for weaknesses often and protect digital supply chains to stay safe from cyber threats.
