On January 14, 2025, Spanish technology company Fossa Systems successfully launched three new satellites into space, marking a significant milestone in the company’s mission to enhance satellite connectivity services. The launch took place in the United States aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, the space transportation company founded by Elon Musk. This launch coincided with the opening of Fossa’s new offices in Portugal, located at Taguspark – Cidade do Conhecimento in Oeiras.
Fossa Systems specializes in providing satellite connectivity, particularly for remote and hard-to-reach areas, using its satellites as open-source LoRa radio repeaters for the Internet of Things (IoT). The company operates on a business model that charges per message for entities utilizing its satellite constellation, enabling global connectivity. Fossa plans to expand its operations by forming a constellation of 80 satellites, with a dedicated focus on sectors such as maritime, utilities, logistics, energy, national security, and defense.
Fossa’s expansion into Portugal follows the opening of an R&D center in the country in 2023, signaling the company’s growing international presence. The launch of the three new satellites will bring Fossa closer to its goal of keeping four operational satellites, part of the larger 80-satellite network. A viewing party for employees and guests at the Portugal office will celebrate the Falcon 9 rocket launch and the company’s ongoing achievements.
Fossa’s services also attract interest from the Portuguese government and public administration, with solutions addressing critical IoT connectivity needs in remote locations.
