The Lisbon Court of Appeal has ruled that Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) must update the meal allowance paid during holidays to employees hired before April 30, 2017. The allowance has been frozen since 2017, which the STEC union considers an unlawful pay reduction.
Court Ruling:
- CGD must pay the difference between the amounts paid since 2018 and the updated annual rates.
- It must adjust future holiday meal allowances accordingly.
- The bank is also required to pay interest on delayed amounts.
CGD’s Response:
The public bank confirmed it would appeal to the Supreme Court, arguing it is complying with agreements signed with STEC in 2019 and 2022, which include a fixed €233.10 annual payment made in June as a holiday meal allowance.
