The closure of Tupperware’s factory in Montalvo, Constância, marks the end of a 45-year chapter, leaving 200 workers unemployed and the local community bracing for an economic and social downturn. Entire families, many of whom relied on these jobs, now face uncertain futures.
Montalvo, a village of just over 1,200 residents, has relied heavily on the factory since 1980. Local businesses, like Fernanda Valente’s café in nearby Rio de Moinhos, are already feeling the impact. "When Tupperware employees came in, they’d stop for coffee or a beer. Now that’s gone," she shared with SIC.
The closure stems from the bankruptcy of Tupperware’s U.S. parent company, leaving the Portuguese unit, which was fully dependent on it, unable to continue operations.
The Mayor of Constância has appealed to the Ministry of Labor and Social Security to ensure that employee rights are upheld and support measures are provided. As the community grapples with the fallout, the future of Montalvo’s economy remains uncertain.
