Siemens has emerged as the European patent leader in 2024, filing 1,830 patent applications with the European Patent Office (EPO), securing the top spot among EU-based companies. The company has placed fifth overall in the field of computer technologies, including AI and machine learning, marking a significant presence in the rapidly evolving tech sector.
Notably, 25% of Siemens’ patent applications in 2024 are centered on machine learning and AI, with a 60% increase in these areas over the past five years. This focus reflects Siemens' strategic emphasis on industrial AI, digital twins, and data analytics to enhance efficiency and sustainability across industries such as manufacturing, energy, mobility, and infrastructure.
In fiscal 2024, Siemens filed 5,300 inventions worldwide, averaging 24 new patents per day. The company’s R&D investment rose to €6.3 billion, reaffirming its commitment to advancing core technologies. Siemens also operates a central R&D hub in Portugal, which has become a key player in the development of foundational technologies, including AI, data analytics, connectivity, and sustainable energy solutions. This hub positions Portugal among the top six global technology regions for Siemens.
