Portugal’s entrepreneurial spirit is making waves in Rio de Janeiro as 28 startups join Web Summit Rio with one clear goal: building business bridges between Europe and Brazil. António Dias Martins, executive director of Startup Portugal, emphasized the country’s rising role as a top European startup hub and its appeal to Brazilian founders looking to expand into Europe.
Speaking from the Portuguese Consulate in Rio, Martins highlighted the cultural and economic synergies that make Portugal an attractive gateway—offering not only quality of life and safety but also favorable tax regimes and Europe's best stock options policy.
With more Brazilian investors eyeing Portugal and a growing Portuguese presence at Web Summit Rio, the mission aims to accelerate business flows in both directions. “We’re not just here to show what Portugal is doing—we’re here to create lasting partnerships,” said Martins, noting that geopolitical shifts, like tensions with the U.S., make new alliances all the more relevant.
Web Summit Rio runs through Wednesday, drawing over 34,000 participants and spotlighting themes from AI to sustainability.
