Portugal’s .pt Domain Hits Two Million Registrations — Thanks to a Restaurant

Portugal just hit a digital milestone: the .pt domain has reached two million registrations, nearly 33 years after it first went live. And the two-millionth domain? It belongs to Bossa Tavira, a Brazilian-Italian restaurant in the Algarve that had no idea it was making history when registering its site.

The announcement comes from DNS.PT, the non-profit managing the .pt domain. According to Board Chairwoman Luísa Ribeiro Lopes, the local domain is increasingly seen as a mark of trust and security—a growing concern for businesses operating online.

While just under 467,000 domains are currently active, the growth pace is still impressive: it took 27 years to reach the first million, but only eight years to double that. Portugal’s domain growth now outpaces many European countries, reflecting a broader shift in how national domains are being valued again in a globalized digital world.
