FCT has finalized the base version of Amália, Portugal’s first large language model, built by 60 experts across national universities. Based on EuroLLM and trained for European Portuguese, it is now available on the IAEdu platform for 450,000 academic users.
The model holds knowledge up to end-2023 and currently does not process images or video. Positioned as a strategic step in digital sovereignty, Amália gives Portugal its own AI backbone for research, education, and innovation.
