Novo Banco has become the first major Portuguese bank to enter the cryptocurrency space—carefully. While it’s not offering direct access to digital coins, the bank now provides around 150 financial products with exposure to cryptocurrencies through its trading platform.
These instruments, already available on exchanges operating in Portugal, allow investors to track or gain indirect exposure to crypto markets without actually holding tokens. Until now, similar products were only offered by brokerage firms in the country.
In short: Novo Banco isn’t selling Bitcoin at the counter, but it’s opening the door to crypto-linked investments within a traditional banking framework. A cautious move—but a clear signal that digital assets are no longer being ignored by Portugal’s mainstream financial institutions.
