Daimler Truck North America is temporarily laying off 573 employees in Gaston County due to a significant slowdown in new truck orders, especially in medium-duty, on-highway, and electric vehicle segments. The layoffs affect workers at the Custom Truck Services facility and the Mount Holly manufacturing plant, with 546 employees impacted in Mount Holly and 27 at the Gastonia Components and Logistics site.
This workforce reduction is a response to a “sustained reduction in orders and diminished build rate,” according to company officials. The affected employees, mainly truck assemblers, material handlers, technicians, painters, and supervisors, will receive pay through September 9. The layoffs are expected to be temporary, but the exact duration remains uncertain.
Daimler Truck North America employs around 1,400 people in Mount Holly and about 6,500 across North Carolina. The company is implementing similar temporary layoffs at five sites nationwide, including Detroit, Portland, and Saltillo, Mexico, affecting approximately 2,000 workers.
Daimler Truck designs and manufactures medium- and heavy-duty trucks under brands such as Freightliner, Western Star, and Thomas Built Buses. The Mount Holly plant produces medium-duty Freightliner trucks, while Gastonia handles stamping, metal fabrication, and sub-assembly of parts.
