Microsoft has recently hired around two dozen workers from Google's DeepMind team, helping to grow its AI department led by Mustafa Suleyman. Some of the major hires include Amar Subramanya, a former top executive at Google, Adam Sadovsky, a long-time expert at DeepMind, and Sonal Gupta, an important engineer. These new team members are now working on Microsoft's AI tools such as Copilot and Bing.
This trend of hiring from competitors shows how intense the battle is for top AI talent among big tech companies.
Microsoft is rapidly building up its AI abilities after Suleyman left DeepMind and Inflection. At the same time, other companies like Meta are giving huge signing bonuses—up to $100 million—to attract the best AI specialists.
Even with all these new hires, Microsoft recently announced it is cutting jobs for about 9,000 employees, or 4% of its worldwide staff, as part of a larger plan to focus its efforts on AI and other key areas.
