McKinsey Now Has 25,000 AI Agents Out of 60,000 Workers

According to CEO Bob Sternfels, McKinsey & Company is quickly changing because of artificial intelligence. The company now has 60,000 workers, with 40,000 humans and about 25,000 AI agents. This is a big jump from just a couple thousand agents a year and a half ago.

These AI agents work as virtual helpers that can solve problems, plan what to do, and carry out tasks on their own. This change shows what's happening in consulting, with firms like BCG and PwC adding AI into their work to make things faster and start long-term AI projects.

At McKinsey, AI is changing both how people work and how the business works:

- QuantumBlack, McKinsey’s AI team of 1,700 people. It now handles AI projects that make up 40% of the firm’s work.

- Consultants need to mix regular consulting skills with engineering and AI knowledge.

- The firm is changing from charging fees for advice to working together with clients on business plans. They are partnering to share the costs to get results with AI.

McKinsey’s method shows a future where consulting firms add AI agents on a large scale. This boosts how much they can do, how fast they work, and the types of services they provide, which is really shaking up how professional services compete.
