MB WAY Turns 10: Portugal’s Mobile Wallet for 6.5 Million Users

MB WAY, the popular payment app by SIBS, celebrated its 10th anniversary on October 12th, marking a decade of transforming how Portuguese people handle money. From a simple tool for transfers, it has grown into a full digital ecosystem with over 6.5 million users.

Over the years, MB WAY has become more than a money-sending app. Users can now pay in stores and online, withdraw cash without cards, manage subscriptions, split bills, and make donations. The app also supports QR Code and contactless payments, virtual MB NET cards for safer online shopping, and recurring payment management.

Innovation goes beyond phones: MB WAY Pulse brings payments to wearables like bracelets, keychains, and watch clips, while the MB WAY UP! loyalty program rewards users with cashback, challenges, and perks. Social and sustainable initiatives include Ser Solidário for donations and MB WAY Eco, replacing paper receipts with digital alternatives.

Looking ahead, MB WAY is expanding into Europe. Through the EuroPA consortium, alongside Spain’s Bizum and Italy’s Bancomat, SIBS aims to create a pan-European mobile payments network.

“Ten years ago, MB WAY started a new era of payments in Portugal. Today, it continues to lead digital transformation, anticipating user needs and promoting a connected and sustainable country,” said Vítor Fernandes, Chairman of SIBS.

The anniversary was celebrated with MB WAY ON TOUR, featuring performances by Vizinhos, Calema, Sara Correia, and Diego Miranda, with tickets distributed via app challenges and contests.
