Grupo Luz Saúde and Siemens Healthineers have partnered to pilot remote CT and MRI exams at Hospital da Luz Funchal and Hospital da Misericórdia de Évora. Using AI-powered technology and in-room cameras, experienced doctors guide local teams and patients in real time, ensuring precision and access to top medical expertise without travel.
Hugo Marques, head of Digital & Automation at Siemens Portugal, compared the system to football’s VAR, highlighting its potential to retain medical talent and position Portugal as a hub for remote healthcare. The approach could even allow Portuguese doctors to perform exams for hospitals across Europe.
The technology is already in use in Scandinavia, Germany, and the US, placing Portugal among early adopters. Future applications may include CT scans inside ambulances to accelerate stroke treatment, while the system also offers opportunities for training junior technicians alongside senior specialists.
