Issuu Closes Braga Office, Laying Off 48 Employees Drag

Issuu, the SaaS content platform, has closed its office in Braga, leaving 48 employees without jobs. This move follows the company’s acquisition by Italian firm Bending Spoons in July 2024. The office officially shut down on December 31, 2024.

Issuu first opened its Braga office in September 2021, later relocating to the Railway Station Building in 2023. The closure marks Issuu’s exit from Portugal, just over three years after entering the market.

At the time of expansion, Issuu described the Braga office as “strategic” for hiring technical talent. However, the acquisition by Bending Spoons led to rapid restructuring. The decision to close the office was announced in August, with some employees remaining until the year-end shutdown.

Pedro Araújo, a former IT engineer at Issuu, noted that the process was “quick but well-managed.” Araújo left in September, while the remaining staff stayed until December.

Issuu’s global offices in Copenhagen and Berlin remain operational, although the Berlin location is reportedly also marked as “permanently closed.”

Bending Spoons has a history of restructuring post-acquisition, having laid off 75% of WeTransfer’s staff and significantly downsized Evernote. The closure in Braga reflects this ongoing strategy.
