IBM CEO Arvind Krishna: AI Won’t Replace Programmers, but Will Boost Productivity

At the SXSW event, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna shared his perspective on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on programming, pushing back against claims that AI will replace human developers.

Krishna believes AI will eventually generate 20-30% of a company’s code, significantly enhancing developer productivity. This estimate contrasts with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who predicts AI could generate up to 90% of code.

“If you can write 30% more code with the same number of people, will you have more or less code?” Krishna asked, emphasizing that AI adoption will lead to greater efficiency and market expansion rather than job losses.

His remarks suggest that rather than replacing programmers, AI will serve as a powerful augmentation tool, enabling companies to build more software and scale faster.
