Spanish nanosatellite company FOSSA Systems has launched a new research center in Oeiras, Portugal, with an initial investment of two million euros. Founded in 2020, the company has expanded to a team of 32 and successfully launched 20 test satellites. These devices gather data directly from sensors on Earth, bypassing traditional telecom networks, making them ideal for remote monitoring.
Portugal was chosen for its proximity to Spain and its skilled workforce. The center has already hired engineers from leading universities and plans to grow to 20 employees over the next three years.
FOSSA Systems specializes in lightweight satellites under 10 kilograms, offering an affordable entry into space technology. The company plans to deploy a network of 80 satellites by 2025, supporting industries such as agriculture, logistics, and defense. Among its first clients are major organizations like Microsoft and government agencies.
