Digital Sovereignty in Portugal

Portugal is really thinking about its digital sovereignty since it relies more and more on big global tech companies. A study by Art Resilia checked out the country’s tech independence, control over important setups, and how well it bounces back from cyber issues. The results? It's a mixed bag.

Only 5% of the tech stuff that runs Portuguese digital things is actually located in Portugal. This means most of the country's data is subject to other countries' laws. Email setups are better, with over half being local. Plus, lots of people using open-source tools shows the country is pretty independent when it comes to making software.

Important setups like internet providers and data centers are mostly controlled by Portugal or the EU, which helps things stay strong. But, cybersecurity isn't great. A third of the groups looked at had security problems, not many use DMARC, DNSSEC is basically not used, and relying on US-based CDNs brings up worries about sovereignty.

So, Portugal needs a plan to make its digital stuff more independent without shutting itself off from the world. This plan should protect data, setups, and tech, while sticking to its own laws and what it believes in.
