Portuguese cleantech Builtrix has joined the EU-funded WeForming project under Horizon Europe, aiming to transform buildings from passive energy consumers into Intelligent Grid-Forming Buildings (iGFBs). The initiative unites 17 partners from nine countries to develop digital tools, interoperability frameworks, and business models that enable buildings to actively participate in energy networks.
In Portugal, Builtrix leads a pilot at Palácio do Gelo Shopping in Viseu, a 175,000 m² complex with a 5.5 MW capacity. The site includes CHP, gas generation units, ice storage, advanced water treatment, and smart meters, making it an ideal testbed for energy flexibility.
By applying AI-based forecasting, analytics, and interoperability tools, the pilot will show how large commercial facilities can boost efficiency, become active grid nodes, and even generate new revenue streams. “Buildings like Palácio do Gelo can function as flexibility service providers, delivering real-time energy optimization and ESG compliance,” said Javad Hatami, co-founder and CEO of Builtrix.
