BMW’s Portuguese Tech Hub: Critical TechWorks Driving Mobility and Innovation

Under the leadership of Rui Cordeiro, Critical TechWorks has grown into one of BMW Group’s largest technology hubs worldwide, employing over 3,000 professionals across Porto, Lisbon, and Braga. Founded in 2018 as a joint venture between BMW and Critical Software, the hub was designed to focus on software development and digital transformation for the automotive giant.

"We are an example of how Portuguese talent is contributing to the future of mobility and the digital transformation of the BMW Group," says Rui Cordeiro, CEO since 2018. By 2025, the hub expects to hire 100 more employees, and by 2026, around 330 new hires, highlighting Portugal’s potential in software engineering.

The hub attracts young talent from universities, offering training, challenging projects, and global exposure.

Critical TechWorks operates with a horizontal, autonomous structure. Teams of six to seven people work in units and clusters, adopting agile methodologies such as Scrum.

Rui Cordeiro explains: "Everyone is listened to, with the freedom to advance solutions, which generates an environment of trust and constant collaboration." This model has allowed the hub to retain top talent, innovate effectively, and become an international benchmark for technology within the BMW Group.
