AWS reports that 41% of companies in Portugal are already using AI, according to their latest study, "Unlocking Portugal's Ambitions on Artificial Intelligence in the Digital Decade 2025. " This means about 96,000 businesses have started using AI in the last year, which is roughly one company every five minutes.
Startups are leading the way, with 62% of them using AI, and more than half of them have made AI a central part of their business plan.
Companies like Unbabel and Visor. ai are using Amazon Bedrock to help them grow and improve customer service. Even older, established businesses are not behind—companies like Secil and Ascendi are using AI for tasks like managing employees, improving safety, and handling customer support.
The results are clear: 77% of companies using AI say it has greatly increased their productivity.
But there are still some challenges, like not knowing the rules around AI, thinking it’s too expensive, and not having enough skilled workers. AWS is working on solutions through programs like re/Start, AWS Academy, and by working with universities and government institutions in Portugal.
AI is already making a big difference in Portugal, but to make the most of it, more small and big businesses will need to adopt the technology.
