Addvolt Acquired by U.S. Giant Carrier After Pioneering Electric Tech for Trucks

Addvolt, the Portuguese startup known for its innovative electric solutions for refrigerated trucks, has been fully acquired by Carrier, the U.S.-based global leader in HVAC and transport refrigeration. Born in 2014 at UPTEC – the University of Porto’s tech hub – Addvolt was the first company backed by Carrier Ventures in 2022. Now, just a few years later, it becomes part of the Carrier family.

The startup, headquartered in S. Mamede de Infesta since 2020, developed a plug-in system that allows trucks to recover, store, and use electric energy, significantly reducing fuel use and emissions. In 2023, it employed around 50 people and recorded €8.2 million in revenue.

“This is more than a purchase – it’s a strategic move to push innovation beyond traditional refrigerated transport,” said Edward Dryden of Carrier. With roots in Portugal and investors from Germany, Portugal, and the U.S., Addvolt now steps onto the global stage.
