The regional government of Galicia (Xunta) is once again demanding an official seat on the board of directors of state-owned shipbuilder Navantia. This issue has caused long-standing tension, as the region wants a direct voice in how the shipyards are managed.
Galician Minister of Economy and Industry, María Jesús Lorenzana, has sent a formal request to Madrid, but the central government has not yet responded. This initiative is backed by a unified regional front, including Galician nationalists (BNG) and other political parties (PP, ERC, and Bildu).
Why is Galicia Disappointed?
Although Navantia operates its most critical shipbuilding centers in the Galician towns of Ferrol and Fene, the local regional government has no direct representation in corporate leadership.
Instead, there is a clear regional imbalance:
- Andalusia's Influence: The last three presidents of Navantia (including the current chief, Ricardo Domínguez) all before held high-ranking roles in the Andalusian regional government.
- Lack of Galician Leadership: The last time a professional from Galicia led the public company was back in 2017.
Current Galician Presence on the Board
Right now, out of 12 board members, there are only two Galicians. However, they represent trade unions and central ministries rather than the local Galician administration:
- Emilio José García Juanatey: A representative of the CC OO trade union section in Ferrol.
- Estela Pazos: Chief of Staff to the Spanish Minister of Labour, Yolanda Díaz (joined the board in 2024).
- Additionally, two Galicians hold top executive positions on the management committee: María Ángeles Trigo (Director of Internal Audit) and Diego de Santiago Lareo (Chief Financial Officer).
