Union Denounces New Collective Dismissal at Nokia Portugal

The Union of Telecommunications and Audiovisual Communication Workers (STT) has condemned a collective dismissal involving eight employees at Nokia Portugal, raising concerns about the legality and motivations behind the process. The company has not yet responded to requests for comment.

According to the union, the workers received notices stating they would be relieved of their duties — with pay — due to the alleged absence of tasks they could perform. STT argues that this justification is “fallacious” and based on a “virtual reality” contradicted by the employees’ actual workload.

The union accuses Nokia of targeting staff who opposed the transfer of part of the business to Capgemini, prioritizing shareholder interests over workers' rights. STT claims the situation represents a “gross violation” of the duty to provide effective employment and requested an urgent meeting with Nokia’s HR department to halt the process.

The union warns that this dismissal could signal broader restructuring to come, especially if the government's proposed labor package moves forward with more employer-friendly rules.

This is not the first large-scale layoff at Nokia Portugal. In February 2024, the company dismissed around 140 employees, citing the need to “redefine the cost base” to adapt to a difficult macroeconomic environment and remain competitive.
