A new analysis of over 8,700 job postings reveals a harsh reality for the Portuguese tech scene. The Teamlyzer Portugal IT market report 2026 confirms that the industry is almost entirely concentrated in two places: Lisbon and Porto. While there is a lot of talk about decentralization, the data shows that the "tech map" of Portugal remains largely empty outside the major coastlines.
According to the latest IT news in Portugal, this concentration makes the choice of location the biggest factor in finding a career-defining role.
A Look at the Numbers: Lisbon vs. The Rest
The tech job concentration in Lisbon and Porto is overwhelming, accounting for 82.16% of all vacancies. Lisbon alone holds more than half of the national market, leaving very little for the remaining 18 districts.
- Lisbon: 51.72% (The dominant force)
- Porto: 30.44% (The second hub, but far behind)
- Braga & Aveiro: ~11% (The only other significant presence)
The Portugal IT employment statistics by district show a staggering drop-off after the top four locations. For example, Setúbal represents only 1.29% of the market, while major regions like Alentejo and Algarve combined don't even reach 1%.
The "Landscape" Beyond the Hubs
Despite tax incentives and talk of remote work saving the interior, eight districts combined—including places like Bragança, Viseu, and Castelo Branco—represent only 0.77% of openings. In places like Portalegre and Beja, the IT industry is practically non-existent.
This reality makes it essential for professionals in the interior to use platforms like devs.com.pt to find remote-friendly companies. The data is clear: while you can technically work from anywhere, the companies doing the hiring still have their eyes fixed almost exclusively on Lisbon and Porto.
