After 6 amazing years at Expedia Group, I, Tiago Cunha, have recently been impacted by a company-wide layoff. This was my first real job after academia, and I’m incredibly proud of what I’ve achieved—from starting fresh to growing into a Senior Machine Learning Scientist.
At Expedia, I had the privilege to work with several impactful teams, including Lodging Ranking, Vrbo Ranking, and the Traveler Trust ML team. My work focused on multi-objective, multi-stakeholder recommendation systems, with an emphasis on revenue optimization and traveler long-term value—challenges that required both technical expertise and strong business alignment.
I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with some of the most brilliant, kind, and inspiring colleagues. Your support, mentorship, and shared laughs made my journey unforgettable, and I’m deeply grateful.
During my time at Expedia, I also contributed to the academic community with peer-reviewed publications:
“Juggler: Multi-Stakeholder Ranking with Meta-Learning” – RecSys 2021
“A Hybrid Meta-Learning and Multi-Armed Bandit Approach for Context-Specific Multi-Objective Recommendation Optimization” – RecSys 2024
Now, I’m actively looking for new opportunities and open to roles as a Senior Machine Learning Scientist—ideally remote or hybrid near Porto or Braga, Portugal. I’m passionate about applying machine learning to real-world, high-impact problems and excited to bring my experience to a new team.
If you know of any opportunities or just want to connect to chat about ML, feel free to reach out. I’m thankful to everyone who has been part of my journey—and best of luck to those navigating career transitions. 💙
