Portuguese Unicorn Anchorage to Safeguard BlackRock’s Crypto Holdings

Anchorage Digital, the crypto bank co-founded by Portuguese entrepreneur Diogo Mónica, has been selected by BlackRock to custody cryptocurrencies for its funds — including bitcoin. This marks a major milestone for the Lisbon-born unicorn, which reached a $1 billion+ valuation in 2021.

Anchorage will be responsible for storing a portion of the bitcoin held in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF, alongside Coinbase. That fund currently holds over 575,000 bitcoins, valued at more than $45 billion. But the partnership goes beyond bitcoin — it's global and extends across digital asset custody, staking, settlement, and governance.

“This is a huge step, both personally and professionally,” Mónica said, noting that Anchorage now safeguards over $50 billion in digital assets. While the size of the deal with BlackRock remains under wraps, it could add “tens of billions” more under custody. Anchorage is also the only federally chartered crypto bank in the U.S.
