Portuguese Software Powers BMW iX3, Cementing Portugal in Global Automotive Tech

The upcoming BMW iX3, launching in Portugal in March 2026, showcases software developed by Critical TechWorks (CTW), the joint venture between BMW Group and Portuguese company Critical Software. This software is central to the digital intelligence of BMW’s new models, highlighting Portugal’s growing influence in the brand’s global ecosystem.

Founded in 2018, CTW has become BMW’s largest software hub in Europe, employing over 3,300 people across Lisbon, Porto, and Braga. The teams develop around 150 automotive software products, from digital services and AI solutions to factory support systems, shaping how millions of drivers interact with their vehicles.

Christine Marconcin, CTW COO, emphasizes the impact of Portuguese talent: “Our teams transform digitalization, AI, and sustainability challenges into solutions that drive the mobility of the future.” With 1,200 people now focused on BMW’s Neue Klasse digital architecture for the next generation of electric vehicles, Portugal is firmly established as a strategic innovation hub for BMW worldwide.
