Portugal’s Strategic Step into the European Data Market

Portugal has hit a major milestone in its bid to become a leader in the digital economy. At the Altice Labs facilities in Aveiro, the first successful pilot of the ED-X Test Bed was recently completed. This project marks a shift toward a "sovereign" data model, allowing Portuguese companies to share and monetize their information while keeping full control.

The ED-X Test Bed: Powering Data Monetization

Led by Sooma in a consortium with partners like NOS, Vodafone, and IP Telecom, the ED-X Test Bed Altice Labs initiative is designed to confirm technology that turns data into a financial asset.

This project is backed by a €1.7 million investment from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). By June 2026, up to 43 similar pilot tests are expected to be completed, helping national businesses integrate into global value chains.

European Standards and Sovereignty

The technology used in Aveiro follows strict international protocols. The Gaia-X and IDSA implementation Portugal ensures that data remains interoperable across different platforms but always under the owner’s rules.

Key features of this architecture include:

  • Digital Contracts: Automatic data exchange based on predefined Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
  • IDSA Connectors: Specialized APIs developed by Altice Labs to ensure proprietary data never leaves the owner's control without permission.
  • Risk Reduction: Lowering the legal and technical barriers to cross-border information sharing.

Altice Labs Strategic Data Infrastructure 2026

The successful trial between QART and Altice Labs proved that Portuguese companies can now "export" digital services to the European Union. According to technology news updates, this positions Aveiro as a critical hub for the future European Single Data Market.

According to devs.com.pt, these 43 pilots are essential for Portugal to compete in an economy where data is as valuable as physical currency. This infrastructure ensures that as companies grow, they don't sacrifice security for scalability.
