The defense sector in Portugal is taking a massive leap forward. Local tech firms are moving away from basic software and entering the high-stakes world of military aviation, bringing advanced defense contracts directly to the region.
A Braga-based company called Keydef (owned by Sketchpixel) signed a major deal with an Indian aerospace firm. Together, they are going to build a heavy-range autonomous military drone called Kaalbhairav. Since the project will create around 50 highly specialized engineering roles, tech professionals are already tracking the latest global tech jobs in the area to land a spot in this new industry.
What the Kaalbhairav Drone Can Do
This new plane is built for serious, long-range military operations. It can carry up to 30 kilograms of cargo, fly non-stop for 17 hours, and cover distances up to 1,500 kilometers.
This marks the official start of military drone manufacturing Portugal is kicking off this year. The drones are fully equipped for precision strikes, intelligence gathering, and high-level surveillance. While the main high-security headquarters will stay in Braga, the company is looking at different northern regions and flexible logistics hubs—like how agile teams use a modern summit on coworking setup—to quickly launch their R&D and field testing.
Investing Millions into AI and Defense Tech
The first phase of this project comes with a price tag of up to 10 million euros. This budget will transform unmanned aerial vehicles for warfare production into a core local business. Instead of assembling parts, the team in Braga will develop advanced military simulation, AI command systems, and computer vision technology.
This massive move puts the company at the very top of Portuguese aerospace and defense startups to watch right now. By combining heavy manufacturing with artificial intelligence, this project is turning the region into a serious player on the European defense market.
