What happens to communications when the usual networks go down? MEO has built an answer for the Portuguese Army. The MEO Army network is a tactical mobile network that combines 4G, 5G and satellite technology, so critical communications keep working even when conventional infrastructure is unavailable.
A network you can carry into the field
The solution, called the “tactical bubble,” lets the Army set up an autonomous infrastructure on the ground. It offers real-time voice, video, data and geolocation by joining mobile connectivity with the Eutelsat OneWeb satellite.
Modules, a backpack and 10 kilometers
Hardware comes in transportable modules plus a backpack, which allows quick installation in different operational settings. In open terrain it covers more than 10 kilometers, while the satellite link keeps the bubble connected to other structures and command centers. Think of it as pitching a tent made of signal: set it up fast, and everyone inside stays reachable.
More than a military tool
This is military communications in Portugal first, but the use doesn’t stop there. The same technology can work as a disaster communication network during power outages or when telecom infrastructure is damaged. Rescue teams, authorities and crisis management structures could rely on it to stay in touch. It can also support civil protection and emergency response operations.
What MEO says
José Pedro Nascimento, MEO’s CTO, says the tactical bubble shows how a mobile network can be created and deployed quickly where normal structures no longer exist and communication matters most. In his view, mixing 4G, 5G and satellite lets teams and operations centers stay connected in very demanding situations.
The project reflects MEO’s wider push to build communication solutions for critical contexts, using private mobile networks, satellite technology and advanced systems.
Why it’s worth watching
Resilient connectivity is becoming a core topic for telecom and tech companies alike. If you like following IT industry news, expect more on private networks and satellite links, and technology events are where many of these projects get demonstrated.
