Lusospace Launches Portugal’s First Commercial Satellite, Eyes Ocean-Wide Impact

Portugal is reaching for the stars—and the sea. Lusospace has launched PoSat 2, the country’s first commercial satellite, kicking off a 12-satellite constellation designed to revolutionize maritime navigation with a two-way VDES communication system—think Waze, but for ships.

The full constellation, due by mid-2026, will boost coverage, safety, and even help detect crimes at sea. CEO Ivo Vieira hints at premium services and a future 100-satellite network.

Lusospace, founded in 2002, started with magnetometers and now leads in optical comms, quantum encryption, AR for aerospace, and even gamified music education.

With over 140 aerospace companies now active in Portugal, Vieira says, “The sky’s no longer the limit.”
