“Zero Trust isn’t a buzzword - it’s a mindset.”
Rui Duro, Country Manager at Check Point Software Technologies Portugal, leads the company’s national operations. With over 30 years in IT-including two decades in cybersecurity-he combines deep technical knowledge with strategic leadership. Before managing Check Point Portugal, he worked as a Security Engineer, Consultant, and in technological transformation roles within one of Portugal’s top telecom operators.
In this interview, Rui shares his perspective on AI-driven threats, hybrid work and why human awareness is still the strongest defense.
The Changing Face of Cyber Threats
“Attackers evolve as fast as technology does,” Rui says. The pandemic accelerated digitalization expanding the attack surface. While email remains the main entry point, he notes the rise of phishing, fake job offers and malicious apps targeting both individuals and companies.
SMEs have improved but are still “the weakest link.” Many underestimate risk or see cybersecurity as too expensive, becoming easy targets-or steppingstones-for larger attacks.
From Gen V to Gen VI Threats
We’ve entered the era of 6th Generation (Gen VI) attacks, driven by AI and automation. “These threats are predictive,” Rui warns. “To defend effectively, companies need AI-powered prevention, not just detection.”
Security must now be holistic-covering networks, endpoints, cloud, and mobile. “It’s not enough to lock one door,” he adds. “You must secure the entire house.”
Zero Trust and the Human Factor
For Rui, Zero Trust is a mindset: “Never trust, always verify.” Implementation requires multi-factor authentication, access control, continuous monitoring, and integrated systems.
But tech alone isn’t enough. “If people aren’t aware, even the best tools fail,” Rui says. Regular training and awareness are vital to stay resilient.
A Message to Portuguese Companies
“Take cybersecurity seriously. Attackers go where value exists - money, data or access. Don’t wait. Prepare before it happens.”
An effective plan, he emphasizes, balances People, Processes and Technology, with recovery already in mind. “Assume you’ll be attacked,” he concludes. “That’s not pessimism - it’s readiness.”
