Hiscox Portugal Rolls Out Paid Sabbatical Program for Employees

Hiscox Portugal has introduced a new Sabbatical program, giving employees the chance to take up to seven consecutive weeks off work, fully paid. The initiative is open to all Hiscox Group staff worldwide who have completed five years with the company. Eligible employees can take four weeks of paid sabbatical leave, with the option to extend it by adding three weeks of their annual vacation.

The company says the program was inspired by shifting workplace priorities following the pandemic. Flexibility, trust, and respect for personal time have become just as important as salary. By formalizing this benefit, Hiscox aims to boost well-being while reinforcing a culture of balance and individuality. The insurer believes that happier employees are more engaged, productive, and innovative.

The program is available to Hiscox’s 3,000+ employees across 14 countries. Early results point to strong employee satisfaction: in Iberia, 90% of staff say they’re proud to work at Hiscox—well above industry averages.
